NBCT ranks 15th in nation for "A Community Thrives" Campaign
NBCT seized the opportunity to apply for vital grants through the "A Community Thrives" fundraiser challenge, which ran from September 21-October 16, 2020. The challenge was sponsored by Gannett Media Corp (An Affiliate of USA Today and Sun Journal parent company) and administered by Mightcause. The highest donations were eligible for grants from $2,500 to as high as $100,000.
Thanks to the New Bern and Craven County community, NBCT raised $19,885 donated by 98 loyal patrons and placed 15th in the nation! More than 900 organizations participated in this year's challenge to become eligible for more than $2,000,000 in grants from USA TODAY NETWORK and the Gannett Foundation. Gannet will announce the grant awards in December.
"Although NBCT did not rank in the funds matching category, we are extremely honored and proud to place 15th in the nation. Thank you, New Bern and Craven County! As a community theatre, 80% of our revenue comes from our productions' ticket sales and special events. After the pandemic hit, we postponed or canceled 13 events. The show closures impacted our finances and the very essence of what we do. We miss live theatre, our volunteers, and the community that has supported us for over 52 years. We hope to be back to the new normal soon. These generous donations help keep the magic of theatre alive!" says Angelina Doyle, executive director, NBCT.
The New Bern comedy group Walk-In Bathtub performed on Oct. 10 with an eight-hour Improv-A-Thon event to boost the "A Community Thrives" fundraiser. The 4 p.m.-to-midnight series of performances marked the first time Civic was able to allow the public to take a seat inside the historic theater since March.
