“The instant I met Dani I knew we would be friends for life. She’s just that kind of person. She is the epitome of strength, humanity, philosophy, compassion, and love. There have been many times over the past five years that I have turned to her for guidance and inspiration and now I want to share that again with our beautiful community! This spoken word event is truly a moment that you don’t want to miss!!” Angelina Doyle, Executive Director.

About Spoken Word: Spoken word has been around long before the written word throughout the world. Spoken word is poetry that is performed rather than read and uses a specific flow of speech to draw listeners in to the story. Spoken word made its rise in America during the Harlem Renaissance with poets like Langston Hughes who influenced an era of poetry and jazz. Spoken word is the driving force behind jazz, hip-hop, rap, and poetry slams.

While her poetic accomplishments are to be appreciated, Dani is most proud of her personal achievements. As a witness to domestic abuse and survivor of sexual abuse as a child, a disable veteran, and single mother successfully raising two daughters, Dani realizes that words help even if they don't completely heal. The right words can help young women rethink hasty decisions, be aware of bad situations, and become inspired to know all is not lost. And by sharing her words in both spoken and written word, she hopes to not only have an outlet for herself, but to bring something real that all of her audience can relate to and understand. She apologizes to no one for her honesty and issues only one disclaimer, a warning if you will, when it comes to the reading of her work: "Read, but don't take offense. Absorb, but don't judge. These are my words... not yours."
